What is a slug?
Parts of a URL are referred to as a slug. Such URLs consist of either one word or a combination of words and are understood by both the search engine and the user. Slugs are usually found at the end of the web address. They have the task of briefly describing the content of the website. They are, so to speak, speaking Internet addresses.
What does a slug mean for SEO?
Slugs are helpful in search engine optimization as they show the user directly whether the page content is relevant. Search engines display the URL slugs below the title of the website. Such a slug is displayed in green. If a keyword is included, it is highlighted in bold. As Google probably not only looks at the complete URL, but also at individual sections, the Internet address should be optimized accordingly.
For new websites, the URL can be selected directly so that it fits. If it is an old URL, it makes sense to redirect to a canonical URL. In this way, the old website remains and at the same time passes on the link juice to the new website for a good ranking.
SEOs should design slugs in such a way that they are clear, short, search engine and user-friendly. A cleverly chosen URL can have a major impact on click-through rates and traffic.
