What is an advertorial?

The term advertorial refers to an editorial article that is specially developed for advertising purposes and used on websites and in print media. If required, visual elements can also be used in addition to the pure text. Advertorials have an advertising character, which is why they usually have to be labeled accordingly.

What significance does an advertorial have for SEO?

Advertorials can increase the visibility of a website even though they are marked as advertising posts and provided with nofollow links. This works by making other publishers aware of the brand or store and:

  • Share the advertising post via social media channels
  • report on the corresponding contribution on your own website

For this reason, it is important that the advertorial is exciting and interesting. Such articles attract a lot more attention and are quickly shared online.

By spreading the word via social media channels and other websites, the advertiser has the opportunity to collect organic backlinks. If there is more traffic thanks to the advertising post, this leads to better domain popularity. However, the editorial contribution is not suitable for link building, as too frequent use is considered spam by Google, which is a violation of the Webmaster Guidelines. It is therefore advisable to only use advertorials occasionally.
