301-redirect

seo glossary from digital now gmbh

What is the 301 redirect?

If a 301 redirect occurs, the requesting client receives a response from the web server that the resource has been permanently moved to another URL or an HTML document and can be accessed via this. This redirect redirects a request to the entered URL to the new target URL and displays it.

What does the 301 redirect mean for SEO?

A 301 redirect also has certain advantages from an SEO perspective. If redirected to a new target URL, no 404 error page appears. Instead, the content of the originally accessed page is displayed. Only the URL in the browser line changes. Such a redirect goes almost unnoticed by users. The request only takes slightly longer, so it has no negative impact in this respect.

When is a 301 redirect useful?

A 301 redirect is always useful when the URL structures of a web project change. The redirect is also a good option if the entire domain name changes. If two websites are to be merged, 301 forwarding is also relevant. Perhaps the content of the web project should also be accessible via two different URLs.

Google itself recommends setting up a server-side 301 redirect if the URL of a page in the search results needs to be changed. In this way, search engines redirect directly to the correct page and users are shown its content.
