What is a URL?

URL is the abbreviation for Uniform Resource Locator. Translated into German, this means Uniform Resource Indicator. The URL is also a subtype of the URI, which is a short form of Uniform Resource Indentifier. Both together are usually referred to as an Internet address. It is a very specific website that you simply call up.

What do URLs mean for SEO?

From a search engine optimization perspective, URLs should be selected specifically to give a direct indication of the content of the web project. Important things for good URLs from an SEO perspective are:

  • the purpose of a website should be recognizable (speaking)
  • Website must be readable
  • Only use permitted URL parameters

Users should be able to recognize what the website is about from the URL.

As a small example:

If a carpenter wants to create a website, it would make sense to choose a website that has to do with the carpentry trade. If it is a cabinetmaker, a website with Moebel-aus-holz would be interesting. Users will immediately see that such a site is about wooden furniture. Carpenters, on the other hand, could use websites with window and door installation.

It is important for the search engine that a URL is readable. However, it does not necessarily have to be linked to other websites. It is therefore also possible to create a website without a link and still have it listed in the search engines.

How can a URL be designed?

Not all parameters are permitted in the URL area. Umlauts are among the parameters that may not be used. There are characters that must be written in percentage coding. This applies to these characters: "! / & * ( % ] @ + )$ , ? # [ ; : =".

All Latin letters in upper and lower case are permitted. All Arabic numerals also pose no problem. The characters -,. and ~ are also recognized.
