internal linking

seo glossary from digital now gmbh

What is an internal link?

An internal link is a reference within a website. An internal link refers from one page of a web project to another subpage.

The link power is transported from one website to the next subpage with the internal link. PageRank is also passed on to the linked page. Incoming external links provide the link power. The start page of a project usually has the most link power.

What does internal linking mean for SEO?

Internal links are an important tool in the field of search engine optimization. They are used to control the website ranking of a specific subpage for selected keywords. The anchor text that is used is also important here. SEO specialists usually link internally with the same key to a very specific target page. This pushes the link power.

The specialists prefer to focus on one keyword combination or one keyword per subpage. Depending on the key terms, however, a website can also perform well in the search engines for several keys. However, this is only the case if the keywords are not highly competitive. If you don't want robots to follow some links, simply use the meta tags nofollow or noindex. The content of the link will then not be crawled and indexed.

What if there are no internal links?

It is also possible that some subpages have no incoming internal links. In this case, it is an orphan page. However, this should be changed in order to push the internal link power. This will make the page even stronger.
