What is a domain?

A domain is a part of a domain name system. The domain is uniquely assigned online worldwide. Further subdomains can be assigned to a domain if required. Each domain is assigned an independent IP address.

What significance does the domain have for SEO?

Domains are particularly relevant for search engine optimization. First of all, a domain with a precisely chosen name should be activated. The domain name should preferably contain a keyword. An optimal domain name is relevant both for the ranking in the search engine and for the search success of the users.

Before choosing a domain, webmasters should consider whether they only want to reach people from Germany or whether they want to be found internationally. Domains with .de are only relevant for Germany. For international accessibility, endings such as .com or other country abbreviations are decisive.

What is included in a domain?

First of all, there is the top-level domain. This is either the country code such as .de or .at, or it is a functional reference to the domain such as com for commercial.

There is also the 2nd-level domain, which represents the namespace of the website. If a website is www.beispielschrank.de, the 2nd-level domain is example cabinet.

The third component (www.) is the 3rd-level domain. However, other terms such as blog. and subdomains would also be conceivable here.
